{"id":7195,"date":"2016-10-27T21:11:26","date_gmt":"2016-10-27T21:11:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/darngoodsolutions.com\/blogA\/?p=7195"},"modified":"2016-10-27T21:11:26","modified_gmt":"2016-10-27T21:11:26","slug":"remembering-my-period-6-physics-class","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/darngoodsolutions.com\/blogA\/2016\/10\/27\/remembering-my-period-6-physics-class\/","title":{"rendered":"Remembering My Period 6 Physics Class"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<!-- Facebook Like Button Vivacity Infotech BEGIN -->\n<div class=\"fb-like\" data-href=\"http:\/\/darngoodsolutions.com\/blogA\/2016\/10\/27\/remembering-my-period-6-physics-class\/\" data-layout=\"standard\" data-action=\"like\" data-show-faces=\"false\" data-size=\"small\" data-width=\"450\" data-share=\"1\" ><\/div>\n<!-- Facebook Like Button Vivacity Infotech END -->\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>The Joys of Science Teaching or<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Be Careful What You Say<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/darngoodsolutions.com\/blogA\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/untitled.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7196\" src=\"http:\/\/darngoodsolutions.com\/blogA\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/untitled.png\" alt=\"untitled\" width=\"237\" height=\"213\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>There is an old saying \u201cout of the mouths of babes,\u201d which means something that you say when a small child says something that surprises you because it shows an adult\u2019s wisdom and understanding of a situation.\u00a0Well, I learned my lesson about this the hard way when my 6th period class presented me with a list of things that were said in my classroom, many of them by me.\u00a0Yes, they were 12th graders about to graduate, but as a \u201clower level\u201d class that seldom seemed to be paying really close attention, I was taken aback by the list.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019ll share a few, just those said by me, as follows:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><u><strong>Showing My Age<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p>Malarky!<\/p>\n<p>Feneagle.<\/p>\n<p>No tickie, no washie. (ie: no work, no grade)<\/p>\n<p>Shushie. (trying to make them be quiet)<\/p>\n<p>Fickle factor.<\/p>\n<p><u><strong>Not Sure I Believe I Said This<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p>The tractor goes meee-rrr&#8230;.meee-rrr! high pitched (pointing out that the tractor\u2019s velocity is not 100% constant)<\/p>\n<p>Whenever you see a naked number&#8230; (one without a unit)<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ll whip out their Krypton laser&#8230; (talking about the ability to measure the unit of the second)<\/p>\n<p>Leeft&#8230;Leeft&#8230;Leeft Right Leeft&#8230; (talking about my marching experience in ROTC in college)<\/p>\n<p>Yeah, I wouldn\u2019t argue politics&#8230;especialy if I was as wrong as you are.<\/p>\n<p>How \u2018bout you make fun of him when I\u2019m not talking.<\/p>\n<p>The units tell all. (kind of zen like)<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019d be the end of this place.\u00a0(if they had chemistry classes in the physics rooms)<\/p>\n<p>This guy isn\u2019t tied too tight.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s sneaky. (talking about the loss of energy)<\/p>\n<p>The names will be changed to protect the guilty. (something about lab reports)<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s got me, what can I say.\u00a0(student answers question correctly unexpectedly)<\/p>\n<p>This is the 6th period class&#8230; something shady has to be going on.<\/p>\n<p>Plugging and chugging.\u00a0(putting numbers into an equation and cranking out the answer)<\/p>\n<p>I might even get to nickels, dimes, and quarters! (after placing pennies on my arm and grabbing them to demonstrate the first law)<\/p>\n<p>If I locked you in the trunk of a car. (a hypothetical question to talk about frames of reference)<\/p>\n<p>So think about it: You\u2019re a pair of underwear&#8230;. (talking about centripetal force)<\/p>\n<p>We call this simple demonic motion.<\/p>\n<p>It was in the moment.<\/p>\n<p>The earth is like a giant repository of momentum.<\/p>\n<p>Levin-dog here? Linus-dog? Waldinger-dog? (taking attendence)<\/p>\n<p>You know, Andrew, in the beginning of the year, I wondered what people meant when they said that you were annoying&#8230;now I know.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s say I jump out of an airplane without a parachute. (class claps)<\/p>\n<p>You have a fecal imagination.\u00a0(don\u2019t remember ever saying this)<\/p>\n<p><u><strong>And The Worst Of All<\/strong><\/u><\/p>\n<p>I remember my first year of teaching, you know, the year where you do everything right.\u00a0I was using the \u201chappy\u201d and \u201csad\u201d balls to demonstrate elastic and inelastic collisions.\u00a0Holding up the two identical looking rubber spheres, I announced, \u201cThese are my balls.\u201d\u00a0I\u2019m only glad that I was not being observed at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Turns out there were a number of innocent comments that could also be taken in a less than innocent fashion that I had not thought about.<\/p>\n<p>Kinda neat, they bounce up and down. (metal spheres on springs)<\/p>\n<p>I stood on the ceiling and blew on the ball. (probably not accurate \u2013 talking about a monkey and the hunter demo where I blew into a tube with a ball in it near the ceiling)<\/p>\n<p>Both rods are attracting. (electrostatics)<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t stick the ball in! (keeping student from putting tennis ball in cannon)<\/p>\n<p>Wait, let me get out everyone\u2019s favorite toy. (Newton\u2019s cradle)<\/p>\n<p>How can objects be electrified by rubbing?<\/p>\n<p>Rubbing it slow or fast doesn\u2019t matter. (believe I said rubbing the strip)<\/p>\n<p>I like my strings real tight. (talking about my tennis racquet)<\/p>\n<p>I think you guys noticed that you get in pretty deep pretty fast. (comment about how vector problems get complicated easily)<\/p>\n<p>Put a point protector on.
